When You Believe

Following the tenth plague on Egypt, the film shows that Moses takes the death of Pharaoh's son very hard. It is Miriam who raises his spirits with her song, When You Believe. [1:20; one hour and twenty minutes into the film]

Lyricist Stephen Schwartz's original words, "You can work miracles when you believe," were changed to "there can be miracles when you believe," to better reflect the concept that people alone are not the miracle workers, that, oftentimes, we are partners with God. This teaching is found in several sources, including Mekhilta (Yitro, ch 2), the Talmud, and Midrash Rabbah.
