Sounds Familiar
As he sees the flame, Moses hears a voice. In The Prince of Egypt, it is a voice he
hears for the first time, yet it is as familiar as his own [0:43; forty-three minutes into the film]. It
is the Lord's, surely, and it is, indeed, Moses' own. (Actor Val Kilmer, who speaks for Moses in
the film, also gives voice to the Almighty.) This reflects the Kabbalistic idea that we each hear
God in our own voice.
Midrash Rabbah also describes the voice of God at
the bush as familiar to Moses, not Moses'
own, but his father.
