Intro

Well I used to recommend to clients and people & businesses I know that to keep people from seeing things that they should not on an ethernet network that they should use a switched network without hubs and put the switched in locked wiring closets to keep the curious from plugging into the uplink cables to the main switch(es).

Before I go into details as to how this tool works first let me say that this information is for educational purposes and should only be used on a network where you have permission to use these tools. Using these tools on a network without the owner's permission is a good way to get your ass in jail, so consider before you hack.

Article

Well with my discovery of the tool dsniff all my thoughts that switched ethernet networks were more secure that regular ethernet networks went right out the window.

The main tool in the dsniff suite is dsniff. The program dsniff is a password capturing program, but this is not unique, there have been many programs that capture passwords as they go over the wire. But what makes the dsniff suite unique is two other programs arpredirect and macof..

macof

The job of this tool is to flood the network with packets from random MAC addresses thus forcing the switches to fail over to packet flooding mode. This is rather brute-force but very effective since most switches only remember the last 32K or fewer MAC addresses.

I have know about the possibility of forcing a switch into flood mode by over-loading the MAC address table, and on some cheaper switches it's a common occurrence. I once ran into one exceedingly cheap switch that only had room for 32 addresses in it's MAC table (it was designed for home network use). The side effects of using this tool on the network are pretty noticeable on any moderately loaded network.

arpredirect

this program spoofs ARP packets to direct traffic is supposed to be going to another host to the host running dsniff. You then use another program like fragrouter to send the packets on to their real destination.

This tool is an example of a wonderful hack taking advantage of a weakness in the underlying protocol and using it to your own advantage. With this tool it's possible to spoof the address of a primary host or default gateway of a network and have access to all traffic that is destined to it. The side effects of this method of this method are much less than arpredirect and may not be noticeable unless you are looking for it.

Detection

Of the two tools to enable sniffing on switched ethernet networks arpredirect is the hardest to detect. The best method to detect it is to run arpwatch or another tool that monitors ARP traffic and can alert the network administrator when odd traffic occurs. You can also try running a sniffing detector such as AntiStiff by L0pht to detect systems on your network that have interfaces in promiscuous receipt mode that should not. Other than that there is no real ways to detect this kind of attack on a local network.

Wrap-up

The only solution to security on any network is to use secure encryption of all data on the network, but until that happens there will be ways at getting at the data in transit to it's destination. Even though both major newtork operating systems (NetWare & Windows NT/2000) support encrypted passwords for added security, Windows passwords can be cracked by L0pht Crack in relatively short order, and I can't believe that its impossible to crack NetWare's encryption.

So we are back to good security policies of picking hard passwords, changing passwords often, and keeping a lookout for suspicious activity.
