7/2001 Update:

Here's a quick list of what's new in the FAQ:

Quick Disclaimer:

Simply put: This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) is unofficial. This means that it is not run nor sponsored nor supported by the staff at ProHosting. It's only here because I'm a nice enough guy to put it together.

Please read the FAQ before sending me mail. I hate answering questions that I've already answered here.

Oh, and I DO NOT work for ProHosting.

Please don't ask me...

I don't work for ProHosting, so I can do none of these things for you. You'll have to write to webmaster@free.prohosting.com for these tasks.

About the FAQ:

The information in the "Sections" pages deal primarily with ProHosting-specific information. The information in the "Guides" pages, while often relating to ProHosting, contain more general information about that topic which is not necessarily ProHosting-specific. But it all is stuff that can be done at ProHosting (although much, such as .htaccess, is often not available on other services).

I have attempted to write the sections of this FAQ so that the questions and answers follow a certain order from top to bottom. You should be able to read through an entire section and things should flow right along. This way if there is something that you want more info on, it is likely to be mentioned in the next question. I've split items into separate questions to keep you from having to read too much that may be irrelevant to your question. Things are not repeated much throughout the FAQ, but where needed, I've referenced other questions in the FAQ, as well as other sites, that contain relevant information. Also, pay attention to "REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE"'s, which wouldn't be there if they weren't at least of some importance.

Most of the common questions asked on the support mailing list are featured here, as well as a lot of general info for people on every level. If you have a question about something, please read this FAQ thoroughly to see if your question is answered here first. If it is not, or the answer seems vague and you want more info, then e-mail me and I will add it to the FAQ, as well as reply to you directly. I fully admit that I don't know everything there is to know about all this stuff, and lots of questions will arise that no one has thought of yet, but I will do what I can to find the answers somewhere. As they say: "Knowledge is not knowing the answers, but knowing where to find them."

Also, look for "more" markers next to certain keywords throughout the FAQ. Click on them to get more info on that topic.

DOWNLOAD VERSION:

NOTE: This FAQ uses JavaScript for things like question & answer numbering and "more" pop-ups, as well as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for formatting, so please make sure you have JavaScript and CSS enabled in your browser's preference settings if the answer numbers are missing or if the pages look weird. The pages should all be readable without CSS, but I think they look better with it.

About the Author:

As I mentioned above: I DO NOT work for ProHosting. This means that I cannot create accounts, check/change passwords, or do any other administrative stuff for you. If you need that type of work done, send e-mail to webmaster@free.prohosting.com.

If you have any questions, comments or snide remarks ABOUT THIS FAQ, send them to me at sampieri@yahoo.com. But keep in mind (and I may repeat some of this later), I will not reply to you if the answers are actually in this FAQ. I won't even reply to say, "Hey! It's in the FAQ!". I know that this may sound rude, but I have a life and a job and I'm not getting paid to run this site, so I can't devote 24 hours a day to helping everyone who can't be bothered to read a few paragraphs.

Also, I am not the best person to send questions to about writing CGIs and Perl scripts. The info on CGIs in this FAQ is about the extent of my knowledge on the subject. There are links in that section that can take you elsewhere.

If you want mSQL or MySQL access, other server-side script interpreters, FrontPage Extensions and other cool things, you'll have to pay for them, and ProHosting does offer paid service.
