Getting Help

The Questions:

  1. I need help... Where can I find it?

The Answers:

.   I need help... Where can I find it?

ProHosting, as you might expect, has limited support for the free services they offer. ProHosting offers paid web hosting service as well, which has many more features, and much stronger support to go along with it. So, most of the ProHosting staff resources are dedicated to the paid services and the free ones are often on their own, for the most part. Hence pages like this. Hopefully, you can find it all here in this FAQ. If not, here are your other options for getting help with your problems:

Direct E-mail

For official help, send e-mail to webmaster@free.prohosting.com. If you have questions about things in this FAQ, or would like to see something added, send e-mail to me at sampieri@yahoo.com. I cannot do any administrative stuff on the server. I cannot access your account, reset your ownership or permissions, delete your account or files, change your password, add mime-types or any of that type of thing.

FAQs

Besides what you'll find here, there are other FAQs on the web. Some deal with ProHosting specifically, others deal with more specific topics, like CGIs or web design. This FAQ is generally about ProHosting and getting things working here, while touching on a number of general universal Internet-related topics.

Mailing Lists

ProHosting has set up a mailing list (more) which you can post questions and answers to. This list is mostly monitored by other ProHosting users that are nice enough to help others.

To subscribe to the ProHosting Free Support mailing list, send a blank e-mail to:

freehelp-subscribe@list.prohosting.com

When you subscribe, you will have to confirm that you really wanted to subscribe (this is a common thing to do), and instructions will be included on how to access different functions of the mailing list. So keep that e-mail somewhere safe.

To UNsubscribe yourself from the support mailing list, send a blank e-mail to:

freehelp-unsubscribe@list.prohosting.com

After you have subscribed to the mailing list, you will start getting a copy of every message that someone sends to the list. This will no doubt fill your inbox with all sorts of messages. If you need to ask a question, or send a response to the list, send e-mail to freehelp@list.prohosting.com (Remember: if you don't subscribe to the list, you won't see any responces that get sent to the list). When you send questions to the list, a copy goes out to everyone on the list, so assuming most people read the messages, you'll probably get back plenty of responses.

One thing to note is that if you send a reply to someone who's message came through the list, most e-mail programs will reply to that person directly, not to the list, because the "Reply to:" field in the mail will be that of the sender, not the list. So if you want the reply to go to the list, you will have to add the list address, as mentioned above, to the recipient list of your reply. Some mail programs have a "reply to all" feature that should include the list address in the recipient list.

When posting to the list, there are some rules of etiquette that apply:

This is just basic mailing list etiquette that should be followed to keep the list a nice and happy place to be used for its intended purpose: free help. For more info on Internet etiquette, or "netiquette", see the Netiquette Home Page.

Message Boards & Forums

Some people have set up message boards or forums which you can post questions and answers to. Before posting a question or answer, it's a good idea to read through some of the more recent posts to see if the question has been answered already. Here are some sites to go to:

* This forum has been set up at eCircles.com, which is a place where people can hold discussion groups and transfer files and various other things. You'll need to register yourself to use it, but that is free. The invitation code for the ProHosting e-circle is "1409366C8388". Or just click the URL above to go right to the site.
