If your student has been enrolled in a public school in Indiana and you withdraw them the state office needs to know where they went so they do not assume the student is truant.  It is strongly suggested that you contact the state and notify them of your intention to homeschool your student.  They will assign you a “private school number” and will annually send out a form for you to record how many students you have attending your private school.  If you call this office for information and have not registered with them, they will advise you that legally if the State Superintendent requests you to register with the State, you are required to do so.  As a representative for the State Superintendent responsible for being the liaison with homeschoolers, Lora will tell you she is acting upon request of the Superintendent when she requests that you register.  Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) recommends that if the State Superintendent requests you to register, you do so.

It is strongly recommended that all homeschoolers join the HSLDA.  It is an annual fee of $100 {$85 group rate through the IAHE}.  Indiana is considered a relatively easy state as far as legalities related to homeschooling.  However, different school districts in the area have different responses to families making the choice to homeschool or people in the community who may notice your child not attending “school” and may call the welfare department to report you, etc. It is very helpful in these situations to call in the experts and have their council. Visit the HSLDA web site or the IAHE section of our web site for application information.

Indy Plus provides full services for homeschoolers, including individualized curriculum (preschool through 12th grade), record keeping, tutorial services, computer access, and encouragement. The resource center is located near the Indianapolis International Airport. The greatest benefit of Indy Plus services is that we take a great share of the load (selecting curriculum, lesson plans, record keeping) off the shoulders of the parents! This frees Mom and Dad to focus on the essentials of "training their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." For more details and a registration form, visit our website.
