Projects

About the projects

The projects presented here are the result of my own experiments, and are intended to serve as a starting point for others to expand upon. As such they are not recipes for complete pieces of equipment. Nor do they necessarily describe the correct methods or techniques for optimum performance.

Boundary-layer dish microphone

A description of, and suggestions for, a directional microphone assembly using the boundary-layer (or pressure-zone) principle. This device may be used for recording wildlife or other semi-distant sounds.

Available in the following formats: HTML | PDF | zipped Postscript.

Inductive pickup

A simple project to build an inductive pickup. Suitable for use as a direct-injection device which may be positioned like a microphone for capturing any audio-frequency electromagnetic signals. These may be from musical sources, such as loudspeakers, or from many other sources.

Sound-effects for digital processors

About the sound-effects

The effects given here were designed for the Sony® HR-MP5 digital-effects processor. All give good results on that unit, but you should bear in mind that the results on other processors may be unpredictable.

The intention is to provide effects that are useable and adaptable, rather than supply those whizz-bang flashy effects that get boring all too quickly.

Reverberation

Classic hall

A simple, hall type reverberation without too much 'character'.

Available in the following formats: HTML

Stone room

A strong, close and sparse reverberation.

Available in the following formats: HTML.
