Live Butterfly Display
Our live butterfly house consist of a 200 sqm enclosure with a
sealing 5.5 m high. We have 150-200 specimens of butterflies and moths
roaming around each day, featuring 20-25 species native to Palawan. Some
of them are endemic to Palawan, like the Troides plateni Birdwing, the
big and beautiful Papilio lowi, the rare Pachliopta atropos and
the huge Attacus lemairei Emperor Moth. Some species are found
in other places in the Philippines and other Asian countries, too, but are just
as interesting and beautiful for the visitor of our butterfly house.
Apart from the butterflies the garden also features lots of larval host plants,
colourful flowers and orchids, a small creek with running water and a fish pond.
At the entrance of the butterfly house a number of text boards in English, German
and Tagalog provide important information on butterflies and moths, their ecology,
life cycle, survival strategies, etc. A spacious hatching cage contains
samples of the various stages of the butterfly life cycle as to ease the visitors
understanding. Inside the butterfly house colour plates help you to identify
and learn more about the various species.
At the native style bamboo hut you can sit by a table and enjoy refreshments like ice cream, cold beverages and snacks, while the butterflies flutter from flower to flower just in front of you. We also offer various souvenirs like laminated pictures of butterflies, T-shirts, bred butterflies in bamboo frames, native handicrafts and other gift items.
