What is Netrek?
Many other people have given their versions of the definition of netrek, and they are a good representation of other players' opinions, so I included them here. My favorite ones are near the end.
Definition of Netrek:

"Netrek is a 16-player graphical real-time battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. The game is divided into two teams of 8 (or less), who dogfight each other and attempt to conquer each other's planets. There are several different types of ships, from fast, fragile scouts up to big, slow battleships; this allows a great deal of variance in play styles." – Newbie manual, a.k.a. cliché definition

"Netrek is a 16 multiplayer game. This game can only be played on the internet! Netrek is a game which takes lots of skills. So if you ain't good enough don't try to play someone better then you, unless you wanna get doosh!!" - Spirit
"Netrek is a network team game, in which the object is to kick some ass. The graphix sucks, depending on the client that you're using, but the game is highly addictive, once you get into it." AlienX
"Greetings!!! I am the famous, nay, the infamous Capt Nipples, and this is my Netrek page. Netrek you ask? As in what the hell is it and what is your weird facination with nipples, freako? hahah, all in good time. Netrek is a networkable multiplayer computer game, and you guessed it, its got a Star Trek theme. Oh, and one other thing, IT RULES!!! Severly addicting, it strikes even the most prepared and casts them down into the dank pits of sloth and indifference. :)" Capt. Nipples
"Netrek is a star-war based computer game consisting of maxmum 16 players with two sides of 8 players each. A lot of times this game may become out of balance if one side has too many players quitting the game. You might not believe me but I must warn you now that this game is extremely ADDICTING. In fact, it will mislead you away from the reality and take you into the world of Netrek.

WARNING: Leave this site NOW if you are a student...PLEASE...This game won't do you any good at all...This game is extremely addicting because of the following three reasons. First of all, you are playing against your fellow human beings. Many of your opponents (may be yourself too) are university students majoring CS/CE or EE or even sometimes university PROFESSORS(NOT KIDDING). Since brain-work is the most important part of this game, it will be hard for you to outwit such a highly intelligent group of people like them. Secondly, this game requires an incredible amount of time and energy. It is nothing like the games you play with a Nintendo. It may take years of practice before you can master all the different skills that are neccessary for you to become a great player. Remember as you get better at it, your opponents gain experience and skill at the same time as well. Several of the great netrek players have been playing this game for more than five years. Finally and most importantly, this game satisfies our endless desires and cravings. It is a complete package of killing, robbery, stealing, trashtalking, hatred, revenge, and selfishness. It just concides perfectly with the dark side of our human nature. It is understandable that after a hard day of work or study, many people try to use Netrek as a way to escape from reality (even myslef). By the way, all of my friends are telling me that I am just a totally different person when playing this game.

However if you believe you have enough self-control to handle this game or if you are addiction-immune, continue reading….." - jordan

"Imagine the IRC with a graphical interface where space ships, from a scolling overhead perspective, travel the galaxy, bomb, destory, take over planets, and blow other ships away. This fantastic game, is more than a game, it's an event. Netrek features a superficial star trek motif, which is easily overlooked and generally regarded as a non-issue. Netrek, a 16 player real time strategy/action game, can almost be compared to a football game. You have a large range of ships to choose from. The various ships are designed for different tasks. Servers are always up and it's all FREE. All you need is a client and some clue.

...This game is almost an underground thing, though it's becoming less and less so. The flash and trash N128 generation will never even give it a chance but you and I *KNOW* that it's by FAR the best game around. We're all educated, reasonably intelligent and rational people. " Lizard

"Netrek is a live online game with up to 16 players per team trying to conquer each others planets. Each team consists of 8 players or less. Netrek is free and will always be free. To play netrek all you need is a client and a running server to connect to. I've played many other online games and Netrek Is The Best, Period." - DeviL
My definition:

Netrek is a totally free fast-paced real-time multiplayer action team game. It has a very long history of development and revisions, so the balance of the game has been delicately finalized. Unlike other games that cram masses of people into massive arenas, a Netrek game has no more than sixteen players in a game at a time. There are many servers to choose from, you can get to know many of the players on the server. Even though on most clients the graphics are somewhat archaic, they are sufficient. If you must have pretty graphics, this game isn’t for you. If you want nice grafix, go download an interactive screen saver or some other "game" and stare in awe of the nice colors. If you want an intellectually stimulating game, try out Netrek. People, gameplay, teamwork, and the challenge is what makes Netrek an extremely fun and addictive game.
