About

Who am I?
My netrek alias is Mahalalel, and I am a retired netrek add^H^H^H player. This whole site is pretty old
and unmaintained, probably unmaintained since 1996-7, although I still want to make a new edition of netrek. I'm now a
real life software engineer so I'm more able to make it happen (let me know if you're interested: jthirsk@shaw.ca)
I try to be friendly and sometimes even a team player. I was
a captain of an INL "chaos twink team" called Lords of Chaos. I didn't like the Chaos twink stereotype,
but there was generally less skill in our crazy little world, and the "legends" were like ghosts, so much so that
nobody outside chaos believes that "shadow" was a real player.
INL Team.
Someday, I'd love to see a game made that is better than
netrek, (yes, it may be hard to believe, but even though netrek is the
best game out there, there is still work to be done.)

Netrek is the best multiplayer game there is, but...
Netrek is a really cool game, the best I have played
(much better than Subspace,) but it has lots of room for
improvement. I'm wondering if there are any coders out there who
may be interested in creating a better netrek.
Scumming
Yes, in general, scumming is lame, but acquiring different ranks and
ratios adds more goals to the game. Scumming for DI still helps out
the team in most cases. Some people say that you should take the
open planet, and there is logic to this. Now that I have almost justified
scumming, I'll say that most of the time, I don't scum. I enjoy a
competitive team games, so I don't screw them up by wasting armies on rocks.
The funnest thing to do is to play as a team and win. -Classified-
is now an Admiral, and as the 4th law of the univers states, "All admirals
have scummed." HyperPhase got stuck at Captain because I kept sticking
around in games that went nowhere for hours and caused my stats to drop
like a rock, so I started up a new guy so I could have some fun being an
Admiral some day. My stats for my scum character used to be about 11.40
at the time I made Rear Admiral. They used to be 11.75 when I was
Flt. Captain. My DI is currently around 267, and rising fast. Why
become an Admiral? I haven't done it before, and every clue
has to become an admiral at least once :-)

Borgs
Well, I have made a borged client. I'm a bit of a programmer.
If you want more information you'll have to beg ;-). By the way, I haven't
cracked RSA yet, so I don't use a borg when I play. Yes I am really
that good! Hah! Just kidding :-)
LAG!!!
A netrekker's worst enemy, but good for anticipation training.
I used to use phasers quite a bit. Phasers are easier to use under
lag conditions than torps. My ping stats were usually around 700-800ms,
but sometimes they went all the way down to 500ms. On rare occasions (early
mornings, holidays, etc) it dropped as low as 350ms or 400ms. Those
times are the reason my ratio for HyperPhase didn't drop to 0.30 :-)
When I was lagged, I could still bomb, pick up a few easy kills and take
planets. I could also try to suicide ogg. I know it's wasn't very noble
or anything, but it's the best I could do with 800ms response time.
I must have seemed like a total twink, but I always got my man, eventually.
Times have changed, and I have switched ISPs. Now I have a decent
one that allows standard modem latency (around 250-300ms). I remember
that on the first day I got my new ISP around September 1st, I got 20 kills
with one of my first ships. My ratio was rising fast, accounting
for the 5000 kills or so that had already pretty much stabalized my ratio.
So, I switched characters, and now Mahalalel is around a 2.00 ratio.
What I do
I consider myself a well-rounded team player, and I try my very best
to help out others in need. I have even set up my client to flash
people's ships as well as mine when they send distress calls. Sometimes,
I do a lot of ogging and kill controlling. I do a lot of taking,
and sometimes a lot of running. I find it hilarious when enemies
chase me all over the galaxy, especially when I'm in a DD, which I use
often, for quick picking, taking, and, of course, for guided tours of the
galaxy.
My Skills
I'm continuing to refine my skills. I'm
basically working on my concentration, which will improve my non-kamikazee
ogging, detting, dogfighting, surviving multiple oggs, and consistency.
Things I do well on good days are taking impossible
planets, torp-leading, dogfighting, playing on the border, and kill scu..ahem...accumulating.

My Secrets:
Maybe when I retire ;-)
