Symbols - basically, this is anything that I use as a symbol in a fanfic that might not be a normal symbol.

^_^ - OK, everyone. Here's the deal. ^_^ - this little thing has been confusing some of my friends, immensly. It's a smilie face, people! The little carrots (^) are eyes and the underline (_) is a mouth. Got it? *giggles* ^_^

Variations: *^_^* - this is a blushing smilie. /// ^^;;; - Ano... I think this is a laughing smilie... *^_^*

*...* - Anything inside asterisks can be two things. If it's a .txt document, then chances are, it's someone thinking. Otherwise, I might use it to denote an action of some kind. *smiles*

~...~ - Again, this might be a couple of things. If a ghost/dead person/god(dess) is talking, then these are like quotation marks. Otherwise, they could be Mindspeech (or some other form of telepathy). Oh yeah, it could also mean italics.

_..._ - The cheesy way to underline something. ^_^

Italics - Generally a person's thoughts to themself.

boldface - emphasis (duh...)

underlining - Either it's a title, or it's another way to do emphasis. More likely, it's a title of something (ie. - a book)

Suffixes

-chan - A term of affection, usually used for a very close (usually female) friend, or a young child. Ie. - Miaka calls Yui (her very close friend) Yui-chan, and Yuiren is called Yuiren-chan by just about everyone. Nuriko could probably be called Nuriko-chan, too. ^_^ Basically, (I've noticed) this is used for anyone who's really cute - in an SD sorta way. Thus, why I am "Renee-chan" instead of just plain Renee. ^_^ *giggles*

-san - A term of affection/respect. Also used to mean Mr. or Mrs. Ie. - Miaka calls Hotohori, Hotohori-san and calls Yui's mother Hongo-san (I think...)

-sama - A term of respect. Ie. - Nuriko and Tamahome call Hotohori, Hotohori-sama, and most people call Hotohori, heika-sama. In Sacred Trust Kourin calls Ryuuen's teacher, "sensei-sama" - ^_^ this is a bit much...

-sensei - This can also be used as a suffix - usually for a teacher (since that's what it means... ^_^)

aa - Yes

Ai shiteiru - 'I love you.' - A very strong way to say the three words. Has the inflection of, 'I'd like to spend the rest of my life with you.' ^_^ Tamahome says this to Miaka in his letter (when he goes to Kutou).

aniki - older brother (I think this is the more affectionate form of the word, but I used it as the less affectionate form of the word in Osozaki Blooms, 'cuz I didn't know any better at the time...)

ano - I don't know exactly what this word means, but it's used to say "Uh..." or "Um..." Kind of an embarrassed sort of thing - you know when someone says something that embarrasses you and you say, "Uh... well..." Make sense?

Genbu - 'Green Tortoise' (I think) - another of the Four animal gods. (Hokkan Country)

glomp(ing) - Basically, this is when an SD person gives a really big hug to another person (SD or otherwise). ^_^

gomen (ne/nasai) - 'I'm sorry' - the 'ne' is not necessary, but if you use 'nasai' then it means "I'm very sorry."

heika-(sama/san) - 'Emperor' - Usually, the "-sama" ending is used to denote respect.

miko - literally a priestess or temple maiden. In FY the Mikos are the girls from another world who are brought into the ShiJinTenChiSho to call the animal gods. Ie. - Miaka is Suzaku no Miko (the priestess of Suzaku)

nanii - What? or Huh?

ne - Can mean two things. If used at the end of a sentence (ie. - Renee-chan no sugoi, ne?) It means 'right?' (Renee-chan is wonderful, right?) Like the French 'n'est-ce pas?' I don't know if that helped anyone... *sheepish grin* If used at the beginning of a sentence - ano... *blush* I don't know exactly what it means, but it's used kind of as "Hey" - you know, a way to get someone's attention. ^_^ (ie. - 'Ne, Miaka-chan - where are you going?' = Hey, Miaka - where are you going?)

ohayo - Good morning.

(o)kaa-(chan/san/sama) - Mommy/Mom/Mother - the 'o' can be dropped to show more familiarity.

(o)nee-(chan/san/sama) - Older sister - the 'o' can be dropped to show more familiarity.

(o)nii-(chan/san/sama) - Older brother - the 'o' can be dropped to show more familiarity.

(o)tou-(chan/san/sama) - Daddy/Dad/Father - the 'o' can be dropped to show more familiarity.

otouto-(chan) - younger brother

osozaki - late blooming flower; also the name of "Kourin's" bay mare in Osozaki Blooms

SD/SDing/SDed/de-SDed/etc... - OK, I know this is not a Japanese word, but I thought I should stick it into the glossary anyway. It means "(de-)Super Deform(ed/ing/s)" ^_^ I think that covers all of it... And it means exactly what it sounds like - it's when an anime character suddenly looks like a little kid with a big head and stubby arms and legs. Chichiri does this a lot. ^_^ Here's a picture of SD-Hotohori and SD-Nuriko. ^_^

(sichi)seishi - Ano... If you watch FY and you don't know what this means, you're in serious trouble... ^_^ Technically, this translates to '(7) constellations' - in FY, it also means the 7 warriors who guard the Miko of each animal god. Ie - Suzaku's sichiseishi are: Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko.

Seiryuu - 'Blue Dragon' - the animal god who is protector of the ??? (Kutou Country)

sensei - Teacher; term of respect.

Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho - 'Four Gods Sky and Earth' - Um... Duh? ^_^

shogun - 'General' - sort of the warrior leader of a country - Nakago is the shogun of Kutou.

sugoi - wonderful. Ie. - If I were to say, "Nuriko-chan no sugoi!" it would mean "Nuriko-chan is wonderful!"

Suzaku - 'Red Peacock' - the animal god who is protector of the South (Konan Country)

Wo ai ni - 'I love you.' - I've heard that this is actually Chinese... ^_^ Anyway, in Osozaki Blooms and Sacred Trust I basically use this as the way Ryuuen and Kourin express their love for each other - and later for Nuriko and Miaka. ^^;;
